From October 17, 2025 to March 2, 2026, the Fondation will present a major retrospective of works by Gerhard Richter—one of the most influential contemporary artists—born in Dresden in 1932. He fled East Germany for Düsseldorf in 1961 before settling in Cologne, where he currently lives and works.
Continuing its tradition of landmark monographic exhibitions devoted to leading figures of 20th and 21st-century art — including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Joan Mitchell, Mark Rothko, and David Hockney — the Fondation will dedicate all its galleries to Gerhard Richter, widely regarded as one of the most important and internationally celebrated artists of his generation.

Gerhard Richter was featured in the inaugural presentation of the Fondation Louis Vuitton in 2014, with a group of works from the Collection. Now, the Fondation is honoring the artist with an exceptional retrospective — unmatched both in scale and in chronological scope — featuring 270 works stretching from 1962 to 2024. The exhibition includes oil paintings, glass and steel sculptures, pencil and ink drawings, watercolors, and overpainted photographs. For the first time, an exhibition will offer a comprehensive view of over six decades of Gerhard Richter’s creation – an artist whose greatest joy has always been working in his studio.

Queer Modernism 1900 to 1950

With “Queer Modernism. 1900 to 1950”, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen presents the first comprehensive exhibition in Europe dedicated to the pioneering contributions of queer artists to modernism. Featuring more than 130 works by thirty-four international artists – including paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, films, publications, and archival materials – the exhibition project focuses on the first half of the twentieth century. It tells an alternative history of modernism, one in which queer artists placed themes such as desire, gender, sexuality, and the politics of self-representation at the center of their work. It also traces stories of queer life in times of war and resistance. Including artists such as Claude Cahun, Hannah Höch, Jean Cocteau, Romaine Brooks, Marlow Moss or Richmond Barthé.

At Home With Ter Borch

Four hundred years ago, Zwolle was home to one of the most important artist families of the seventeenth century, with world-famous descendants such as Gerard ter Borch and Gesina ter Borch. Many drawings from their childhood have been carefully preserved by the family and today provide a unique glimpse into city life of the time. The Ter Borch family was intimately connected to Zwolle, and in 2025 we will celebrate their legacy with the whole town during Thuis bij Ter Borch. Meet this artistic family in their own city The exhibition at Museum de Fundatie, in collaboration with Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, features over 70 works on paper and 35 paintings, from Dutch, European and American museums and private collections.

Berlinde De Bruyckere. Khorós

Bozar presents a large-scale solo exhibition featuring the work of Berlinde De Bruyckere (b. 1964, Ghent) for the first time. Humanity and the condition humaine are at the core of her compelling oeuvre. De Bruyckere draws on various sources of inspiration: Christian iconography, classical mythology, the works of the Flemish masters and cultural lore. She introduces these influences into a contemporary context; the violence that surrounds us, the images of human suffering on a global scale, but also the beauty and hope for change.

L’Empire du Sommeil (The Empire of Sleep)

The Musée Marmottan Monet presents the exhibition “The empire of sleep” from October 9, 2025 to March 1, 2026.
Curated by Laura Bossi, a neurologist and science historian, and Sylvie Carlier, director of the Musée Marmottan Monet collections, this exhibition will explore the symbolic and allegorical implications of sleep, its importance in secular and sacred imagery, and the ways in which sleep-related scientific, philosophical and psychoanalytical research have influenced art.

The Honest Eye: Camille Pissarro’s Impressionism

With Camille Pissarro, an outsider became a central figure within the Impressionist collective. Born in the Caribbean, he came to France in 1855, sensed the anti-academic upsurge in painting, and attracted like-minded people. With their revolutionary style of painting, they founded the Impressionist movement.

Kandinsky, Picasso, Miró et al. back in Lucerne

In 1935, in the newly opened Kunstmuseum Luzern, an exhibition of superlatives was shown that included works by Miró, Taeuber-Arp, Picasso, Braque, Giacometti, Calder and others. While at the same time in National Socialist Germany, art by Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and Piet Mondrian was being defamed as “degenerate”, in 1935 the Kunstmuseum Luzern was showing works by precisely these modernist artists. The works came to the museum fresh from the artists’ studios. Today, they hang in the world’s most important collections.

The third STEIERMARK SCHAU in 2025 will delve deep into the world of the Eggenberg family and draw parallels to our present day.

Under the title “Ambition & Illusion,” Eggenberg Castle will be transformed into the setting for the third STEIERMARK SCHAU at the end of April 2025. The UNESCO World Heritage Site and all the local museums invite visitors to take a genuine look at the history of the castle and all its inhabitants.

BIEDERMEIER The Rise of an Era
